Gears oiled for first Safari Den Winter Mountain Bike tour
The bikes are serviced and the backup teams organised for the first Safari Den Winter Mountain Bike Tour. The tour will take place from 14 – 17 May 2015 and will take mountain bikers through an area of Namibia that has not been covered by cyclists before.
The Safari Den Mountain bike tour, organised by experienced cyclist and cycling event organizer, Johan Fourie in collaboration with Agra’s Safari Den will cover a total distance of about 360km over three days on district roads, with an optional 100km on the fourth day.
This event is a first for mountain biking in Namibia as it offers an opportunity for cyclists of all level of fitness and experience to test their skills and endurance, and above all, “Get out there and have fun” – as Safari Den’s tag line states. A total of 31 riders have entered to participate, with their back-up teams, bringing the people in the group to 51. Besides this wonderful opportunity to be part of the first group doing the Safari Den Winter Mountain Bike tour, there are lots in store for the group, made possible by Safar Den and co-sponsors. One of the mechanics of DAS Bike Shop will be available on the tour to attend to the bikes and participants can even book a massage for free on day three at Erindi.
The group will start early on Thursday, 14 May at Matchless on the Daan Viljoen road and follow district roads to Wilhelmstal from where the group will drive to Omaruru. On Friday, the riders will take a round trip to the Vingerklip Lodge and back to Omaruru. On Saturday, the route will take the riders to Erindi where they will relax and spend the night at Camp Elephant. On Sunday, the riders who opt to do the last stretch to Okahandja, will take district roads from Erindi’s eastern gate and will join the group again in Okahandja from where they will drive back home. The route includes undulating parts, steady and steep inclines, rough and smooth parts, definitely something for everyone.
The only requirement is that the individuals or the groups should cover the whole distance from Matchless up to Erindi, but as the teams can do the distance in a relay, different parts of the road can be covered by any member of the team.
Supporters can meet the group at the registration, which will take place at Safari Den in the Auas Valley Shopping Mall (top floor), on Wednesday, 13 May from 16:00 to 17:00 with tour briefing from 17:15.
Jurgen Cronjé, Senior Manager of Agra Arms, Ammunition and Outdoor expressed his excitement about the tour. “This type of sponsorship and involvement is also a first for Safari Den and we look forward to spend time with people who love the outdoors. We will meet the group on Wednesday, 13 May at Safari Den, where they can do their last shopping for the trip while registering for the event. A team from Agra/Safari Den, including Abelene Boer, Senior Manager, Marketing of Agra will accompany the group on the tour to give backup support and share the outdoor experience with them,” Cronjé said.
